The Process
From application to launch
Starting a DSSD hub takes 4-6 weeks. Here's the path.
Apply
Fill out the founder application below. Tell us about yourself, your university, and why you want to lead a hub.
Onboarding call
Meet with DSSD leadership. We walk you through the model, answer questions, and assess mutual fit.
Build your team
Recruit 3-5 founding members across software, GIS, data, and project management.
Register & set up
Register as a student org on campus, set up your hub workspace, and get matched with your first project.
Deliver & grow
Complete your first project, onboard new members, and establish your hub as a lasting campus institution.
Requirements
What we look for in founders
- Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student
- Passion for technology and social impact
- Leadership experience (formal or informal)
- Commitment to at least 2 semesters of hub leadership
- Ability to recruit a small founding team
- Willingness to dedicate ~5-8 hours/week
You don't need to be a CS or data science major. Hub leaders come from many backgrounds; what matters is your ability to organize a team and drive projects forward.

We review your application within a week and schedule an onboarding call. From there, you can start building your team and working toward launch.
Can I start mid-semester?
Yes. The best time to apply is 4-6 weeks before a new semester, but we accept applications year-round.
